Sundsvall Theaterhouse:
In October 2007 the Sundsvall Municipal Council resolved on an open architecture competition for an arts centre and theatre in the city.
Skeppet – The Ship
We chose to design a compact building, stacking the many performance and exhibition spaces required, vertically. With a view over the fjord, the entrance hall and foyer were located on a raised platform from which a route leads the audience into the centre of the building.
The site at the river delta was developed as a culture park for outdoor performances with the new building as a backdrop. The culture park connects both parts of Sundsvall and allows for easy access to the new cultural building from all sides.
The complex shapes created by the theatre spaces can be experienced by the audience. The theatres were planed to be enveloped by shining gold coloured aluminium panels reflecting light installations. The backstage areas is connected with the existing building and is, thanks to the vertical layout of the building, easily accessible from all performance spaces. The building itself was to be enveloped by a brick structure inspired in size and material by the existing shipping buildings of this part of Sundsvall.
