SAT1:
Headquarters SAT1
Oberwallstrasse 6, Berlin
Conversion of a listed historical building

The building, located in the centre of Berlin, started life in 1900 as a department store. It was used after the war, with a temporary roof construction, as government offices. Today it is the representative headquarters building of the TV broadcaster SAT1

The façade, parts of the staircase and the original roof are listed historical constructions. The original steel roof arches are covered by a light weight steel and glass construction and made visible within a double skinned climatic façade. The form of the new aluminium shell hovering above the old creates additional usable floor area.
The main entrance receives simple modern furnishing, and the cast iron stair is extended with a contrasting modern element. The building is extended in a confident modern style with respect for the existing substance
